The Mar\u00eda Cano University Foundation celebrates the recent publication of the article \u00abInterdisciplinary Assessment of Premature Newborns and Their Families in a Hospital Setting in Medell\u00edn, Colombia\u00bb in the high-impact scientific journal (Q2 in Scimago) Children, the result of rigorous collaborative work among three research groups from our Faculty of Health Sciences: Psique & Sociedad (Psychology), FISIOTER (Physiotherapy), and FONOTEC (Speech-Language Pathology).<\/p>\n
The study was led by Professor Juan Esteban L\u00f3pez Cardona (Psique & Sociedad), along with researchers Angie Estefan\u00eda Mesa Burbano and Leidy Yohana Apolinar Joven (FISIOTER), Jenny Paola Ojeda Casallas (FONOTEC), and Natalia P\u00e9rez Doncel (Bolivarian University Clinic).<\/p>\n
The research proposes an interdisciplinary assessment model for premature infants, integrating tools such as the HINE neurological examination, the EFIN orofacial function protocol, and the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire for caregiver quality of life. The findings reveal that, although most infants do not present motor or feeding difficulties, caregivers report significant impacts on their psychological health and social relationships, underscoring the need for comprehensive interventions within the hospital setting.<\/p>\n
This work highlights the value of the connection between academic programs and real-world clinical settings, such as the Cl\u00ednica Universitaria Bolivariana, a partner institution where the study was conducted and clinical rotations take place. The publication reaffirms our university’s commitment to applied research, interdisciplinary work, and social impact in neonatal and family health.<\/p>\n
