In this context, a recent review of scientific evidence examined the potential of isometric exercise as a complementary tool for cardiac rehabilitation.

Traditionally, cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation programs have focused on exercises that involve body movement, such as walking, cycling, or dynamic strength training. However, isometric exercise—which consists of generating muscular force without joint movement, as occurs during a plank or when holding a fixed position—has attracted growing interest within the scientific community.

For many years, this type of exercise raised concerns regarding its safety because of the potential increase in blood pressure and cardiac workload during performance. In addition, the lack of standardized protocols and the limited availability of clinical evidence restricted its inclusion in rehabilitation programs for individuals with coronary artery disease.

To better understand its effects, researchers conducted a review of randomized controlled trials, considered one of the highest levels of scientific evidence. The findings showed that isometric exercise is a safe and well-tolerated intervention capable of producing both immediate and long-term benefits for people with coronary artery disease.

Among the most significant outcomes were improvements in blood pressure, coronary circulation, exercise tolerance, and the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. These results suggest that isometric exercise could become a valuable complementary strategy within cardiac rehabilitation programs, particularly for individuals who face limitations in performing traditional dynamic exercises.

Additionally, some studies indicate that this exercise modality may help optimize cardiac stress testing by reducing procedure time and decreasing the need for certain medications commonly used during testing. Its minimal space and equipment requirements also make it an attractive option for implementation in both clinical settings and at home.

Although these findings are encouraging, researchers emphasize the need for larger and longer-term studies to confirm the benefits and establish clear recommendations regarding the most appropriate intensity, frequency, and duration for individuals with coronary artery disease.

This study provides new evidence on innovative approaches to cardiovascular rehabilitation and opens the door to future research aimed at expanding therapeutic options that promote patient well-being and cardiovascular health.

For more information about this study, readers can access the full article published in the Research and Innovation in Health Sciences Journal (RIICS).

#MásMaríaCano

Coronary artery disease remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, driving the continuous search for strategies that can improve cardiovascular health and the quality of life of those affected.
