Smart wristbands can make it easier to track various health and physical activity indicators. However, determining whether their measurements are reliable requires comparing them with reference methods. In this study, researchers evaluated the ability of a smart wristband to measure resting heart rate by comparing its results with those obtained from an electrocardiogram (ECG).<\/p>\n
The study included 19 healthy, physically active young men between 18 and 30 years old. Heart rate measurements were collected under controlled laboratory conditions while participants remained in both supine and seated positions. Two different versions of the device were analyzed.<\/p>\n
The findings revealed a high level of agreement between the wristband measurements and the ECG recordings. The mean absolute percentage error was below 2%, and the concordance coefficient exceeded 0.97. In addition, the average bias was less than one beat per minute, while the limits of agreement remained within the clinically acceptable range of \u00b15 beats per minute across all tested conditions. Both device versions demonstrated satisfactory measurement properties.<\/p>\n
These results suggest that smart wristbands may be useful for monitoring resting heart rate in healthy young men under static conditions. However, the findings cannot be generalized to other populations or settings. The authors highlight the need for future studies involving women, different age groups, a broader diversity of skin tones, and dynamic conditions such as exercise and sleep.<\/p>\n
