Objetive:
The B1 Academic English Program at the Language Center of Fundación Universitaria María Cano aims to strengthen students’ communicative competencies in English, enabling them to understand the main points of clear standard-language texts, interact in a variety of everyday situations, and function in personal, academic, and social contexts with a greater degree of autonomy.

At this level, the student strengthens their ability to produce simple and coherent texts, describe experiences and events, and express opinions, plans, and aspirations clearly.

The program is based on a communicative approach that promotes meaningful use of the language, supporting the progressive development of comprehension, production, and interaction skills, as well as the formation of individuals with intercultural openness, critical thinking, and the ability to participate in diverse environments.

Candidate profile

Registration requirements: Candidate must be over 16 years old and be able to read and write. Also, it must hold a bachelor’s degree or at least have ninth grade approved.

Language skills
To register on the Academic Program of English B1, the candidate must prove its knowledge of English at an A1 and A2 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Verification of this requirement may be done through any of the following options:

  • Submission of the certificate of completion of Level A1 and A2 issued by the Language Center of Fundación Universitaria María Cano.
  • Submission and passing of the placement test administered by the Language Center.
  • Submission of an internationally recognized certification approved by the Ministry of National Education, in accordance with current regulations.

Note: If no certification is available, the applicant must take the institutional placement test.

Basic technological skills
To take part in the Academic Programs of English offered by the Language Center of Fundación Universitaria María Cano, whether in on-site or distance modality with a virtual education strategy, the student must use technological resources such as a computer, camera, microphone, and internet connection in order to interact with the virtual learning environments of the program.

Program duration: 180 hours (Level B1: 90 hours and Level B1+: 90 hours)
Direct work: 144 hours (B1: 72 hours + B1+: 72 hours)
Independent work: 36 hours of directed autonomous work. (B1: 18 hours and B1+: 18 hours)
Labor skill certificate: Academic Knowledge Programs in English B1.
Sessions: Morning or evening (Monday to Friday) and Saturday.
Learning Methodology: On-site or distance modality with a virtual education strategy (Medellín Branch)
Program cost: $1.845.009 (total cost for 2026 María Cano Medellín branch

Graduate Profile

The graduate of the B1 Academic English Program at the Language Center of Fundación Universitaria María Cano will achieve an B1 level of proficiency in communicative competence, in accordance with the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

At this level, the student is able to understand the main points of clear texts in standard language when dealing with matters that are familiar to them, whether in work, school, or leisure situations. They can manage in most situations that may arise during a trip to areas where the language is spoken.

Likewise, they can produce simple and coherent texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest, describe experiences, events, wishes, and aspirations, as well as briefly justify their opinions and explain their plans.

Admission requirements:
To enter the Academic Knowledge Programs in English offered by María Cano, the applicant must complete the following procedure:

  1. Fill out the online registration form.
  2. Upload to the platform at the end of the registration form, the following documents one by one (in PDF format), as indicated at the end:

– Original study certificate of ninth grade or bachelor’s degree diploma (11th grade), issued by the school with validity of no more than one month.
– A legible photocopy of the ID (enlarged).
– A 3X4 cms. size photo, light blue background.
Notes:

  1. Documents are not received physically unless required during the admission process.
  2. Minors must appear with a guardian and attach a photocopy of their ID.

Note: Technical academic programs may include Saturday classes.
