Researchers from the Fisioter group, Piedad Rocío Lerma Castaño, and the Fonotec group, Amilbia Palacios Córdoba, successfully published the article titled: Attentional skills, developmental areas, and phonological awareness in children aged 5–6 years in the journal Cognitive Development, classified as A2 «TOP-type Product,» a result of high-quality knowledge generation activities according to the Minciencias 2024 measurement model.
This product is part of the research project: Relationship between locomotor skills, attention, and reading acquisition in children aged 5 to 6 years, developed in cooperation with researchers from the MI Dneuropsy research group at the Universidad Surcolombiana and the Cuerpo Movimiento group at the Universidad Autónoma de Manizales, institutions with which there are interinstitutional cooperation agreements.
The results of the study revealed a relationship between attention processes and phonological awareness, as well as between fine motor skills and phonological awareness. These findings address the importance of multifactorial assessment in school-age children, contributing to the early detection of neurological developmental disorders and the implementation of educational strategies that improve neurodevelopment, while adding to the scientific literature on the importance of prevention in early childhood.
This publication strengthens the cohesion and cooperation indicator, which aims to value the joint work between the members of the Fisioter group from the Physiotherapy program and the Fonotec group from the Speech-Language Pathology program, both belonging to the Faculty of Health Sciences at Fundación Universitaria María Cano.
