Blood donation is a commitment to society

At the María Cano University Foundation, Neiva headquarters, the blood donation day was carried out satisfactorily, in which there was the participation and support of the Blood Bank of the Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo Hospital and the Faculty of Nursing of the Universidad Surcolombiana, with professionals who made known the health benefits that this practice brings, not only for the donor but for many more people; It helps renew cells, improves circulation, regulates iron and can help prevent heart attacks among many other benefits. In addition, for each donor, three people benefit. The work was framed by talks, dialogues and awareness raising for the university community.
This activity, which is carried out twice a year at the headquarters located in the capital of Huila, allows students and administrators of the Institution to take part in the good practices and benefits that blood donation brings, also allowing them to learn about the topic and debunk many of the myths that exist about it. At the same time, a culture of solidarity is generated with the community and with the inhabitants of the region.
The requirements that are established by the health sector, to join the donation sessions, include: being in an age range that goes from 18 to 65 years, having a weight above 50 kilos and being in good condition. health, for each donation red blood cells, plasma and platelets are taken, which go to different patients, so it is said that each donor can save up to three lives.
According to the Colombian Ministry of Health, in the first half of the year, more than 422,000 blood donations were received and 594,031 transfusions were performed, taking into account that 57.7% of donors were between 18 and 34 years old. The departments with the highest rates of blood donors per thousand inhabitants who are old enough to donate are: Atlántico, Santander, Bogotá, Huila, Tolima and Caldas. It is estimated that each year around 1,500,000 transfusions are performed on more than 390,000 patients.
