Cybersecurity, a fundamental issue in the era of business digital transformation
- 16 enero, 2023

It is not a secret that companies are increasingly entering the era of digital transformation, where important processes are based on information management through technological tools, which brings great advantages in terms of information availability, but requires Strengthen levels of security and confidentiality. According to Kaspersky Latin America, cybersecurity is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. It is also known as information technology security or electronic information security, which shows that a deficiency in the cybersecurity of any company puts the most valuable computer assets it possesses at risk.
When reviewing the National Cyber Security Index (NCSI) report, Colombia ranks 65th in the global list that measures cybersecurity and according to Fortinet, in Latin America and the Caribbean a total of 137,000 attempted cyberattacks were registered in 2021. According to the Colombian Attorney General’s Office, there is the following report on the level of cyber attacks between 2020 and 2021:
The Colombian Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications has identified which are the crimes with the highest growth in 2021 in Colombia:
According to the cybernetic center of the national police during 2022 at the level of cities in Colombia there were 54,121 complaints for computer crimes distributed as follows:
In Colombia, situations have arisen that have compromised large organizations, one of the cases is that of Empresas Publicas de Medellín – EPM, where on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, it suffered a cyber attack that forced it to close its customer service offices. and request its officials to work from their homes as a preventive measure, although the provision of residential public services was not affected. Another important case occurred at the EPS Sanitas at the end of November 2022, which affected the operation of the website, preventing users from accessing appointments and certified medications. (The Republic, December 2022).
Companies looking to improve cybersecurity in their computer processes not only focus on strengthening at a technical level but also at a cultural level. According to the February 2021 issue, Computer Weekly magazine refers to the importance of cybersecurity management by its employees in the following sentence: “An effective “human firewall” can prevent or mitigate many of the threats that companies face. today” and recommends taking into account seven elements that strengthen the culture of business cybersecurity:
- Leadership
- Interfunctional links
- Education
- Relevance of employees
- Attitudes and behaviors
- Ecosystems
- Metrics
This shows that in order to generate a good level of cybersecurity at the business level, not only must have a strategic plan to detect risks and mitigate them from a technical perspective, but also training plans must be generated seeking the creation of a culture of cybersecurity that strengthens the barriers to access information both inside and outside the company and an expert team in cybersecurity that supports it.
