Researchers Juan David Ramírez and Lizeth Noreña-Buitrón, graduates of the María Cano University Foundation based in Cali, have carried out a revealing study under the direction of the research professor and clinical physiologist José Luis Estela Zape. Their research has documented an unusual and worrying case of Covid-19 and dengue co-infection in an adult male patient, which has been published in the renowned international journal Anales de la Faculty of Medicine, Peru, with the title: «Fatal outcome in patient with coinfection between SARS-CoV-2 and dengue», which provides a comprehensive view from the pathophysiological and clinical perspective.
This case report reflects a rare interaction between two pathogens of great global relevance. The simultaneous coexistence of Covid-19 and dengue triggered a challenging and complex immune response, intensifying inflammation and affecting multiple physiological systems. This coinfection raises crucial questions about possible pathological synergies between the SARS-CoV-2 and DENV viruses, increasing the severity of the disease and complicating its clinical approach.
The devastating impact on patient health highlights the urgent need to understand in detail how the interaction between these viruses can modify host physiology, trigger complex immune responses, and ultimately influence clinical outcome. This unique case provides an invaluable opportunity for additional research in the field of immunopathophysiology, offering essential data for the development of more effective preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in similar situations in the future.
The sustained commitment of the María Cano University Foundation in academic and research training has been fundamental to cultivating the potential of future researchers such as Juan David Ramírez and Lizeth Noreña Buitrón, under the direction of research professor José Luis Estela Zape. This approach has contributed significantly to the advancement and influence in scientific research, consolidating a legacy of impact in the field of health and science.»
