Hearing Health Reaches the Community Through a Speech Therapy Initiative in Popayán
- 8 abril, 2026
Within the framework of the Comprehensive Health Services Fair organized by the Hospital Universitario San José de Popayán, the active participation of ninth-semester Speech-Language Pathology students from Fundación Universitaria María Cano stood out, as they contributed to community well-being through health promotion and prevention activities under clinical supervision.
The activity, held on April 7 and 8, aimed to promote health education and encourage the adoption of healthy habits among users, staff, and the general public, becoming a meaningful space for interaction between academia and the community.

During the event, students led a hearing health stand where they provided guidance, educational activities, and basic hearing screenings. They also shared key information about hearing care, risk factors, and the importance of early detection of auditory disorders, fostering preventive awareness among participants.
This initiative was carried out in alignment with the institutional outreach program “Actívate con la María Cano,” promoting active student engagement in community settings and strengthening both the social impact and the educational value of the experience. Such initiatives allow for the integration of academic knowledge with real-world contexts, generating meaningful contributions to community well-being.

The process was supported by professors Diana Isabel Zambrano Uribe and Milton Ferney Delgado Orozco, who guided and supervised the activities. This experience strengthened students’ clinical and communication skills, reaffirming their social commitment and highlighting the importance of collaboration between healthcare institutions and higher education in benefiting the community.
