New patent for María Cano
- 6 marzo, 2024

The María Cano University Foundation was granted, by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, the utility model patent, corresponding to a multi-sensor digital goniometer with important applications for measuring angles, directly and precisely, in analysis. of movement in the field of physiotherapy.
What is a goniometer?
It is a measurement strip that allows you to identify the movement of the joints and is a tool for the assessment of pathologies of the musculoskeletal system in people of all ages and genders.
Why digital?
Working with digital tools in the health sector minimizes the margin of error; In the case of this new tool, it supports the accuracy in data collection for the physical assessment that is carried out before the treatment, during it and after the intervention of the physiotherapy professional. The main objective of this device is to assist in patient care, as well as evaluate progress in recovery after physical therapy.
The Physioter group
Categorized in A by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, it has 41 researchers in the cities of Medellín, Cali, Neiva and Popayán, it is led by the master’s degree in neurorehabilitation, Fanny Valencia Legarda; It has 15 research hotbeds and currently develops research, development and innovation projects; that seek to provide solutions to the different needs that contribute to the care of human body movement and health in the contexts and regions of Colombia.
In the case of the development of the multisensor digital goniometer, the work has been directed by researchers Iván Eusebio Bustos Zapata, Angie Estefanía Mesa Burbano and María Alejandra Fernández Polo from the Physiotherapy program at the Medellín headquarters of the María Cano University Foundation, who since In 2022, they began the process of presenting the invention through the call “Creating it is not enough” of the Minciencias, achieving the aforementioned patent.
Whats Next?
From this moment on, María Cano, through the Fisioter Group and the aforementioned researchers, begins the path to achieve the technological transfer of this device to health professionals. This phase has an implementation time of approximately 6 months where approval of the device will be sought, by Invima, at an optimal level of development for its commercialization.

In this way, the María Cano University Foundation receives its third patent (two for invention and one for a utility model), which constitutes an excellent indicator of technological developments that are protected through intellectual property (industrial property) and that allow knowledge is transferred to society.
This patent, which is valid until May 30, 2032, generates an achievement in the production derived from the research projects carried out by the Institution with its different work groups.
