The students of the Public Health subject, belonging to the physiotherapy and speech therapy programs, at the Neiva campus, received an outstanding talk by a professional doctor, belonging to the Colombian League for the Fight against Cancer, where they were told about the risk that brings the consumption of tobacco and electronic cigarettes to health. This addiction becomes the main risk factor for lung cancer and more than sixteen types of cancer that affect the health of Colombians. Both conventional cigarette consumption and electronic cigarettes affect the smoker and the people in the environment, denominators passive smokers, who are those people who, despite not being smokers, inhale this smoke, which contains up to three times more nicotine and tar than the mainstream smoker draws in. Of eight million deaths a year in the world, one million are passive smokers.
The environmental impact generated by tobacco consumption is as serious as the impact on the health and well-being of the country’s inhabitants in the different regions. Every year, smoking costs the world six hundred million trees, two hundred thousand hectares of land and twenty-two billion tons of water, also generating almost eighty-four million tons of CO2. During the talk, the students were able to give their point of view regarding the situation, expressing their opinions not only in general about the so-called tobacco culture, but also from the field of health, which will be fundamental in the development of their professional skills.
