- 7 diciembre, 2023

Joint research between the María Cano University Foundation and the University Departmental Psychiatric Hospital of Valle has discovered a notable connection between the risk of falls and functionality in adult patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital in southwestern Colombia. The study, titled «Risk of falls, physical performance and functionality in adult patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital in southwestern Colombia,» is the result of collaboration between researchers from both institutions: José Luis Estela-Zape and Wilmer Arley Criollo López of the Foundation María Cano University, together with Angélica María Pereira Escobar and Diana Constanza González Ortiz from the Valle University Departmental Psychiatric Hospital. This research not only shows a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, but also a deep understanding of the complexities in the physical and mental health of patients in specialized hospital settings.
The study focused on analyzing the relationship between the risk of falls, physical performance and functionality in adult patients hospitalized in psychiatric settings, specifically in basic activities of daily living. Comprehensive evaluations including fall risk measurements, physical performance testing, and functional capacity analysis were performed in this group of patients.
The results showed a clear connection between the risk of falls and the decrease in physical performance, as well as a correlation between these variables and functionality in basic activities of daily living in patients hospitalized in psychiatric settings. These findings deepen our understanding of the factors that influence the quality of life and care of these patients, highlighting the importance of comprehensive approaches that consider both mental health and the prevention of falls and maintenance of functionality.
The collaboration between both institutions has laid the foundation for future research and the implementation of intervention strategies aimed at improving the quality of life and care of adult patients hospitalized in psychiatric settings in Colombia.
This study not only provides valuable insight to the academic and healthcare communities, but also underscores the critical importance of cross-institutional collaboration to address the complex challenges associated with caring for patients in specialized settings such as psychiatric hospitals.
