RIICS is developing a policy to promote the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in scientific publishing
- 19 octubre, 2026
The Journal of Research and Innovation in Health Sciences (RIICS) has developed a policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in the scientific publishing process. This initiative recognizes the potential of these tools to support research and scientific communication, as well as the risks associated with generating inaccurate, incomplete, or biased information, data confidentiality, process transparency, and accountability.
The policy establishes principles and guidelines to guide authors, peer reviewers, editors, and other editorial contributors in their use of these technologies. Its purpose is to promote responsible and transparent practices without compromising scientific integrity, confidentiality, or publication transparency. To this end, it emphasizes the importance of critically reviewing and verifying content generated or assisted by AI, while maintaining the ethical and professional responsibilities of everyone involved in the editorial process.
The document addresses various aspects of incorporating these tools into research and scientific publishing. These include declaring and documenting AI use; reviewing the accuracy and validity of content; ensuring manuscript originality; verifying sources and bibliographic references; protecting confidential information; and overseeing editorial evaluation and decision-making processes. It also addresses transparency regarding the use of AI in producing supplementary content and the ongoing review of editorial criteria as these technologies evolve.
The policy is based on recommendations from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Council of Science Editors (CSE), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), among other guidelines referenced in the document.
With this policy, RIICS establishes a framework for the use, disclosure, and oversight of AI in its editorial processes, grounded in the principles of scientific integrity, transparency, and editorial responsibility.
