Sensitization and respect for disability
- 15 marzo, 2022

Students from the Physiotherapy program of the María Cano University Foundation in Medellín and members of Institutional Welfare visited the University of Antioquia to participate in the workshop «Thinking and feeling disability» coordinated by the group of Cultural Guides of that institution, whose objective to generate an approach to various situations of disability and recognize the importance of the Physiotherapy program in the care and support of the population. This academic work generates a dialogue of knowledge about basic concepts and methodologies around disability, the participants go through different points where they find theoretical and practical knowledge on the subject. The workshop phases are as follows:
- Contextualization with experiential, visual and auditory situations related to segregation as a controversial concept and contrary to inclusion.
- Mobilization by five bases in which the following types of disability are addressed: neurodiversity, visual, auditory, physical and mood disorders.
- Cross-cutting activities that allow reflection on the physical and social barriers that sometimes cause inclusion to be interrupted.
- Finally, a space for feedback where personal reflections are brought up, allowing the relevance of the contents, the methodology and the workshop participants to be assessed.
This space promotes the construction of new ways of addressing the conditions of disability and diversity, in a joint exercise between social actors that privileges self-recognition and that of those around us, and also favors the strengthening of transversal and technical skills, of people who experience it, favoring the construction of caring and equitable societies.
The awareness-raising work with the university community is carried out within the framework of the dissemination of the Institutional Inclusion Policy and promotes the construction of diverse and inclusive societies, the objective of the educational processes carried out by the María Cano University Foundation. Institutional Welfare will continue to promote spaces that raise awareness and generate actions to recognize diversity as the potential for social development, promoting the commitment of the institutional community and the realization of the #MásMaríaCano mission.
