Significant international internship experience University of Malaga

Within the framework of the commissions for the training of teachers, approved in Rectoral Resolution No. 863 of 2021, the teacher Piedad Rocío Lerma Castaño, assigned to the Neiva de la María Cano headquarters, carried out her international internship as a requirement of the doctorate that He is studying Cognitive Sciences. The professor was received by Dr. Juan Luis Luque Vilaseca, director of the Department of Evolutionary and Educational Psychology, director of the Leeduca Group and the Laboratory of Neuroscience and Education of the University of Malaga, during the months of March to May where he was advancing his research project with experts on the topic related to phonological awareness from an embodied cognition perspective.
As a result of the stay, it was possible to carry out articulated work with experts such as the doctor in pediatrics and development, Eric Tridas, specialized in diagnosis and management of learning differences such as dyslexia and ADHD, professor at the University of Florida; and Dr. Elsa Cárdenas Hagan, bilingual speech and language pathologist, PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas; also with researchers and members of the Spanish Dyslexia Federation with the purpose of exchanging experiences of the Leeduca research group for the early detection and intervention of dyslexia in children in the provinces of Spain.
During their stay, an evaluation of phonological processing was carried out on children from an educational institution in Fuengirola and practices were carried out in the laboratory with the equipment of:
- fNIR: which provides real-time monitoring of tissue oxygenation in the brain while the subject performs a task or receives a stimulus, making it easier for the researcher to quantitatively confirm brain functions such as: attention, memory and problem solving while the individual performs a cognitive task.
- Electroencephalogram (EEG): which measures electrical activity in the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp, allowing electrical potentials to be seen in the form of waves through a computer.
- Eye-tracking.
There was also a presentation aimed at students of the speech therapy program with the topic related to motor development, fundamental motor skills aimed at students in the eighth semester of speech therapy at the University of Malaga and a mirror class was held with the topic: «Early identification of developmental dyslexia and its comorbidity with dyscalculia», aimed at students of the speech therapy program of the María Cano University Foundation at Neiva and the Speech Therapy program of the University of Málaga. The academic activity included speakers: Mariana Natalí Loredo García Psychologist, doctoral student in Psychology at the University of Málaga; and María Rodríguez Moreno Speech therapist, interim substitute professor of the department of evolutionary and educational psychology, coordinator of the early care subject of the IV course speech therapy degree and doctoral student in Psychology at the University of Málaga.
