Speech-Language Pathology Strengthens Maternal and Infant Care Through the IAMII Strategy
- 19 octubre, 2026
Speech-Language Pathology students at Fundación Universitaria María Cano participated in a training session on the Comprehensive Women- and Child-Friendly Institutions (IAMII) strategy at Hospital San José as part of their Clinical Practice III course.
During the session, students explored the role of Speech-Language Pathology in maternal and infant care, focusing on the early assessment of newborns’ oromotor and swallowing reflexes, as well as the evaluation of latch and sucking during exclusive breastfeeding.
The training also highlighted the importance of early detection of orofacial myofunctional disorders that may interfere with safe feeding, emphasizing the value of early intervention in promoting babies’ well-being and overall development.

This academic experience encouraged knowledge exchange and reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in healthcare to provide compassionate, comprehensive care grounded in scientific evidence.
Through initiatives like this, María Cano continues to educate professionals who can contribute to the care of mothers, newborns, and their families in diverse healthcare settings.
