Update on neonatal patients

The María Cano University Foundation, Popayán campus, held the first comprehensive neonatal patient management update seminar. The activity was developed as part of the continuing education processes of the Physiotherapy and Phonoaudiology programs, with the aim of expanding knowledge about patient care. newborn in the different contexts of the health sector. The academic work was advanced with an interdisciplinary approach involving physiotherapists, speech therapists, nurses, neonatologists and pediatricians.
The seminar was attended by five speakers, who have extensive experience on the subject: Dr. Francisco Alfredo Acosta Argote, a pediatrician specializing in Neonatology, with his presentation on clinical evaluation of the newborn; the medical doctor specialist in pediatrics Carolina Ortiz Gutiérrez, with the topic of neonatal feeding, initiation of breastfeeding; the physiotherapist Sarit Medina Herrera, who spoke about the role of the physiotherapist in dealing with the newborn; the neonatal specialist nurse, Maribel Mosquera Rojas, with the topic of neonatal care; and the speech therapist Yuli Patricia Castañeda Meneses, with an intervention on the role of the speech therapist in the comprehensive management of the newborn patient.
Postnatal care initiatives need to expand beyond coverage and just survival to include quality of care. These guidelines aim to improve the quality of essential and routine postnatal care provided to women and newborns, with the ultimate goal of improving maternal and newborn health and well-being. That is why it is important to know the current management of the neonatal patient within the interdisciplinary team carried out by professionals both in-hospital and in outpatient clinics.
