Ask for Ángela
- 12 agosto, 2025

The María Cano University Foundation, Neiva campus, joined the launch of the “Ask for Angela” strategy, promoted by the Women’s Office of the Huila Government, with the aim of preventing gender-based violence in entertainment venues—starting with bars and later extending to other sectors of the city.
The campaign, which originated in the United Kingdom, has been adopted globally and is now arriving in Colombia through the International Nightlife Association, of which Asobares Colombia is the exclusive member.
How does the protocol work?
• Anyone at risk—or anyone who identifies a risk—can approach the staff and ask for “Angela” to activate the emergency response.
• Once activated, the staff must:
-
Offer initial guidance and support.
-
Identify who activated the code and discreetly locate the person at risk.
-
Separate them from the aggressor and take them to a safe, private place to talk.
-
Listen to their needs and provide support as requested.
-
In emergency cases, call 123 or specialized hotlines such as 155 (national) or the Purple Line in Bogotá [asobares.org].
-
Help them contact someone they trust or arrange safe transportation if they choose to leave the premises.
-
Record the incident in a confidential format, ensuring privacy unless explicit authorization is given to Asobares.
National Impact and Collaboration
• The strategy seeks to promote protective environments in nightlife establishments by training owners and staff, and fostering institutional coordination that includes local and national authorities.
• In cities such as Medellín, Bucaramanga, Bogotá, Valledupar, Cartagena, and Cali, the protocol has been successfully implemented, with positive effects—such as reduced violence cases—and support from networks like the police, trade associations, and tourism organizations.
María Cano is present in initiatives that aim to positively impact the university community and replicates efforts like this one to safeguard everyone’s well-being in various recreational settings.
