Partnership Between Academia and the Health Sector Strengthens Cardiovascular Care in Cauca
- 19 junio, 2026
Collaboration among higher education institutions, government agencies, and healthcare organizations continues to be a key strategy for addressing the challenges faced by communities. In this context, the III Cardiovascular and Metabolic Care Pathway Diploma Program is advancing successfully. Led by the Departmental Health Secretariat of Cauca and the Municipal Health Secretariat of Popayán, the initiative aims to strengthen the competencies of healthcare professionals and contribute to the prevention and management of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases throughout the region.
The diploma program brings together the efforts of several academic institutions and healthcare organizations, including Fundación Universitaria María Cano, which actively contributes specialized knowledge and academic expertise to support the continuing education of healthcare professionals serving communities across the department. This interinstitutional alliance reflects a shared commitment to improving the quality of healthcare services and generating a positive impact on the quality of life of the people of Cauca.

Under the motto “United for Cardiovascular Health: Transforming Lives and Protecting Hearts,” the program promotes knowledge updating, the exchange of experiences, and the adoption of tools that enable more comprehensive, timely, and effective care for individuals living with chronic diseases, one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Colombia.
As part of this educational initiative, Fundación Universitaria María Cano contributes the expertise of professors Eduardo Sarzosa Varona from the Physiotherapy Program and Cristian Pinilla Ortiz from the Nutrition and Dietetics Program. Their participation as academic experts strengthens knowledge transfer and capacity building among healthcare professionals, ultimately contributing to improved care for patients and families across different territories.

Beyond its academic value, this initiative represents a commitment to social transformation through health. By strengthening the competencies of professionals responsible for promoting well-being, preventing disease, and supporting healthcare processes within communities, the knowledge shared through this program extends beyond the classroom to become a tool for social impact, human development, and the strengthening of healthcare systems in the region.
Through its participation in this diploma program, Fundación Universitaria María Cano reaffirms its commitment to social outreach, academic excellence, and the development of strategic partnerships that contribute to territorial development, consolidating its role as an institution that places knowledge at the service of communities and social transformation through education and healthcare.
