Phonoaudiology

Speech Therapy is a health profession that focuses on human communication, its disorders and variations. It is specialized in the areas of hearing, language, speech, voice and oral-pharyngeal function, which may be affected by biological, psychological or social causes that affect the communicative well-being of people and their quality of life.

The speech therapist is a suitable professional for this approach due to his scientific and deep knowledge of human communication as a field of personal and social development. His actions are oriented to identify the population communicative needs, evaluation, diagnosis and intervention of disorders and alterations of communication in the educational, social welfare, health and business sectors. The speech therapist is a project and research manager that contributes to the development of the individual, communities and his profession.

    The Speech therapist of the Maria Cano University Foundation is considered as a professional with critical thinking, autonomous with social commitment and global vision, enterprising and innovative, expert in Human Communication, its disorders and the processes involved including language, speech, voice, hearing and oral pharyngeal function.

    His / Her actions are aimed at:

    • Prevention of communication disorders and promotion of communication health through the administration of programs that guide and educate the community, taking into account current public policies on comprehensive health care.
    • Evaluation of communication disorders and determination of specific diagnoses;
    • Therapeutic intervention for people with communication problems.
    • Advisory to educators, family and interested people in order to enable their active participation in the prevention and care of communicative difficulties.
    • Management of social projects in accordance with the existing regulations for the exercise of the profession.
    • Research of aspects concerning the disciplinary and interdisciplinary dimension of Speech Therapy.
