The clinical education of nursing students depends largely on professionals who guide, support, and supervise their learning experiences. However, personal and organizational factors can influence mentors’ motivation, participation, satisfaction, and commitment to this role. This raises an important question: can a continuing education program alone strengthen these dimensions of mentoring?

To answer this question, researchers at a tertiary-care hospital in Spain studied 239 healthcare professionals who served as mentors for nursing students. Participants completed a training program and responded to a questionnaire both before and after the intervention, allowing researchers to compare their perceptions regarding different aspects of the mentoring experience.

The findings revealed a specific effect: after completing the training, participants reported higher levels of satisfaction with their mentoring role. However, the intervention did not produce clear changes in their levels of participation, motivation, or commitment. Regarding commitment, a slight decrease was observed, although the change was not statistically significant.

These results suggest that providing training opportunities for nursing mentors can improve their satisfaction with the mentoring process. Nevertheless, learning alone does not appear to be sufficient to strengthen all dimensions of mentoring practice. According to the authors, educational and healthcare institutions should complement training initiatives with formal recognition and supportive organizational cultures that value the contribution of mentors.

The study highlights the importance of continuing to explore strategies that foster greater commitment, participation, and motivation among the professionals responsible for guiding the next generation of nurses. Strengthening these aspects could enhance both the mentoring experience and the quality of clinical education for nursing students.
