FISIOTER Contributes to the Validation of a Multimodal Instrument with a Composite Index for Quantifying Spasticity
- 1 junio, 2026
The Fundación Universitaria María Cano, Popayán campus, is pleased to share with the academic and scientific community a new achievement by the FISIOTER research group. Researcher Elizabeth Roldán González participated as co-author of the article entitled “Development and preliminary validation of a multimodal instrument for spasticity quantification using a composite index: A pilot study,” recently published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, one of the world’s most influential open-access journals, classified as Q1 according to the Scimago Journal Rank.
The article was co-authored by Juan Manuel Rosero Ñañez, Sabrina Schaly, Elizabeth Roldán González, María de los Ángeles Urbano Díaz, and Julián Antonio Villamarín Muñoz, as part of an interinstitutional and international collaborative effort that integrates interdisciplinary expertise from the health sciences and biomedical engineering fields.
This study presents the development and preliminary validation of an innovative system for the objective quantification of spasticity in individuals with neurological conditions. The proposed instrument synchronously integrates surface electromyography, inertial sensors, and force measurement, consolidating these signals into a composite index that captures both the neuromuscular and biomechanical components of spasticity. This advancement represents a significant contribution toward more objective, reproducible, and data-driven clinical assessments, with strong potential for application in decision-making processes within the field of neurorehabilitation.
The work was carried out with the participation of the University of Cauca, the University of Sydney, Fundación Universitaria María Cano, Antonio Nariño University, and in collaboration with ESE Suroccidente, thereby strengthening research internationalization processes as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration.
This important achievement reflects the institution’s commitment to generating high-impact knowledge and consolidating strategic alliances that contribute to the advancement of science and healthcare.
