What is Specialization in Sports Psychology?

The María Cano University Foundation offers the first postgraduate program of Specialization in Sport Psychology under face-to-face and virtual modality in Colombia, in accordance with Law 30 of 1992. This postgraduate program enables the deepening and improvement of skills of Psychological Evaluation and Intervention oriented to physical and sports contexts, with emphasis on two fundamental pillars: 1. Promotion of physical activity, health, and quality of life and 2. Related Psychological Processes with sports initiation and performance. At the same time, it emphasizes interdisciplinary work, recognizing the contribution of applied sciences to physical activity and sports, such as sports training, sports medicine, physiotherapy, and nutrition, among others.

Professional profile:

The Specialist in Sports Psychology will be a specialist with skills for evaluation and intervention in psychological processes in sports initiation and performance, with a broad theoretical, practical, investigative, and interdisciplinary perspective. A professional capable of designing and implementing psychological plans, programs and projects oriented to the prevention of a sedentary lifestyle, the promotion of physical activity, health and quality of life in Colombia.

Admission profile:

Based on the provisions of the Academic Regulations, the registered applicant must comply with the selection process and the requirements demanded in the postgraduate programs.

Similarly, the applicant for the Specialization in Sports Psychology must show the following characteristics:

  • Undergraduate degree in psychology from a legally recognized institution or, failing that, a foreign degree.
  • Good basic communication skills.
  • Willingness to use information and communication technologies.
  • Capacity for independent learning.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in different learning environments.

Occupational profile

The fields of performance of the Sports Psychology Specialist are mentioned below:

  • Carrying out psychological evaluation and intervention processes in initiation and sports performance schools.
  • Advise people related to sports and physical activity on psychological issues, including athletes, coaches, managers, parents, judges, among others.
  • Advise applied science professionals on psychological issues, such as: doctors, nutritionists, physical trainers, methodologists, among others.
  • Coordinate processes in sports psychology areas in public and private institutions, both at the level of conventional and Paralympic sports.
  • Direct and implement psychological training plans, using different methodologies, techniques, and strategies.
  • Direct and implement programs, plans and projects to promote physical activity, health, and quality of life in different institutions.
  • Coordinate teams related to public health and the promotion of physical activity at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Guide courses, workshops, and seminars on the psychology of physical activity and sports in university institutions.
  • Lead and coordinate groups oriented to the study of the psychology of physical activity and sport.

Admission Requirements Undergraduate Programs

Admission requirements New In-person and Virtual Undergraduate Applicant

To enter any of the undergraduate programs offered by María Cano, the new applicant must complete the following procedure:

  1. Fill out the online registration form
  2. Make the payment of undergraduate registration fees $213.022
  3. At the end of the registration form, upload to the platform the following documents one by one (in PDF format) as indicated at the end:
  • Photocopy of the high school degree certificate or diploma, if you have not yet completed grade 11, original study certificate, issued by the school valid for no more than one month.
  • Results of the ICFES tests (Saber 11), if you do not have the results you can attach the citation to the test.
  • A legible photocopy of the identity document (enlarged).
  • A 3×4 size photo, light blue background.
  • Documents are not received physically unless required during the admission process.
  1. Print the registration payment form at the end of online registration or make payment through PSE.
