María Cano Physiotherapy Strengthens High-Performance Sports at the First Colombia Senior Wrestling Cup
- 8 septiembre, 2026
Fundación Universitaria María Cano, Neiva campus, continues to create learning opportunities that allow students to strengthen their professional competencies in real-world, high-demand environments. On this occasion, seventh-semester students from the Physiotherapy Program actively participated in the First Colombia Senior Wrestling Cup, a national sporting event that brought together outstanding athletes from different regions of the country.
Held in the city of Neiva, the competition gathered athletes representing leagues and regional teams from Huila, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, and Nariño, who competed in Greco-Roman wrestling, men’s freestyle wrestling, women’s freestyle wrestling, and beach wrestling, positioning the tournament as one of the country’s most important events for this discipline.

Beyond the competitions themselves, the event became a valuable educational experience for María Cano students, who had the opportunity to apply their knowledge of sports physiotherapy while supporting athletes throughout the different stages of the competition. Their responsibilities included functional assessments, support during official weigh-ins, muscle activation, pre-competition physical preparation, and post-match recovery strategies.
This practical experience was made possible through a collaborative effort between Fundación Universitaria María Cano, Inderhuila, and the Sports Performance Center, strengthening the connection between academia and high-level sporting environments. It also enabled future physiotherapists to face real-world situations related to athletic performance, injury prevention, and physical recovery.
The students’ participation demonstrated not only their technical and clinical expertise, but also essential professional competencies such as teamwork, decision-making, responsibility, and adaptability in dynamic, high-pressure competitive settings.

The process was supervised and guided by faculty members Frank Angelo Castro Aristizábal, Diana Paola Montealegre Suárez, and Juan José Perdomo Trujillo, who ensured a meaningful academic experience aligned with the quality standards that characterize professional education at the institution.
Through their participation in the First Colombia Senior Wrestling Cup, Physiotherapy students from Fundación Universitaria María Cano reaffirm the institution’s commitment to experiential learning, academic excellence, and the contribution of physiotherapy to the advancement of high-performance sports in Colombia.
