Mission

The Maria Cano University is a higher education institution with a presence in local, regional and national contexts; committed to the social projection in the development of teaching, research and extension; and oriented to the training of people with critical thinking, social commitment and a global vision.

Vision

The Maria Cano University Foundation, an institution of higher education, will be recognized for the training of entrepreneurial and innovative professionals by 2026; the quality of its programs and services; the transfer of knowledge to solve problems and needs of the environment, participation in knowledge networks and national and international cooperation; and the contribution to the development and transformation of communities and organizations.

Institutional Principles

The Maria Cano University is governed by the following principles:

Respect: We start with the importance of knowledge and recognition of the human being and its potential to transform itself and its environment, as well as to learn, make decisions, express itself, and inhabit the world.
Equity: We promote a sense of justice and dignity among people, human groups and cultures, valuing and attending their origins and diversity, and enabling communication and interaction between people and groups with specific cultural identities.
Excellence: We promote total commitment to quality focused on the institutional task, as well as to the well-being of the people who make it up and the contexts in which it has participation and impact.
Leadership: We recognize the role that people have in making the right decisions for the collective and their contribution towards the achievement of common goals, in order to obtain shared targets that favor communities and organizations.
Transparency: We value individual, collective and institutional honesty in the way of acting and relating to the environment, as well as the ethical position that guarantees the protection of individual and institutional integrity and of individual and collective resources.
Responsibility: We strive for the individual and institutional commitment to participate in the generation of knowledge, in training processes, inside communities and organizations, as well as to relate to others, taking care of themselves, others and our nature.

The shield

The shield of the Maria Cano University synthesizes its educative mission and the vision it has about its destiny and its projection on the society from which it emerged and still serves.

The coat of arms, in its colors, expresses the excellence of its pedagogical offer, the ecumenical sense of the knowledge it disseminates and the serene critical judgment on itself and on the social sphere and the time in which it acts.

And it also expresses the love that unites it with its university community, with the soul of its structure that is the vivifying mass of its students. Carrying the shield of the Institution is a privilege and a distinction that we must assume with all the force of its expressiveness.

The Flag

The flag of the Maria Cano University preserves the symbols of its philosophy and its vocation in higher education, displaying the colors that represent the quality of its professorship and the transparency of its ethical principles.

The institutional pavilion flames its subtle fabric to the spell of the winds of change and renewal of the new times. A pavilion that embodies the spirit of the Institution, constituted in a daring and ideal educational proposal for the achievement of a better society, projected towards the improvement of its structures, its intellectual and scientific progress, and its solidarity cohesion.

The Logo

The open book to the world: The constant evolution and change, the mind open to learning, the requirements of a globalized society, the interaction between the student, the teacher and the environment in which they perform. The capacity for transformation, the projection of institutional action. With the green color, the institutional origin is represented: Antioquia, the birthplace of both Maria Cano and the Maria Cano University in 1987. Likewise, it is the commitment assumed by showing respect to the environment, which we publicly declare to the society; even more in a world that, every day, witnesses the devastation of nature, product of the disrespect that humans have caused.

The circle of knowledge: Open because it also symbolizes the struggling spirit of Maria Cano, the possibility of projecting herself into the cosmos and having a critical thought, a social commitment and a global vision, as expressed in the new institutional mission, approved by the Superior Council in 2017. It is divided into two parts, exactly the same, as a sample of the coherence between the speech and the executions of Maria Cano.

The central axis: It is a clear sign of respect for women as the core of society, which integrates the family, the basis of transformative dynamics which allow to have more prominence in a world that recognizes Maria de Los Angeles Cano Marquez as example of leadership and nobility … A person who, in the first decades of the twentieth century, was destined to a role of complete submission and silence, but which stirred the masses and was not afraid of being in the midst of controversy, going through the regions of the country and speaking at public squares to defend the rights of all Colombians.
